Player profile – Jimmy Humes

Jimmy Humes was born in Carlisle on 6 August 1942; he played as a winger and began his career Preston. Humes made his debut aged 17 on 26 March 1960 in a 1-1 draw at Nottingham Forest. He wore the number eleven shirt and had replaced the injured Sammy Taylor who had scored in the previous two matches.

The made one appearance the following season in a 1-1 draw at Bolton, this was the final match of the season and the last game in the top tier as PNE had suffered relegation to Division Two.

Humes started the 1961/62 season in the first team and scored his only goal for the club in a 3-2 wins at home to Leyton Orient on 23 September 1962. His last came in a 3-0 League Cup fourth round replay defeat at Rotherham on 28 November 1961.

In trying to find first tem football regularly Humes joined Bristol Rovers in June 1962, but only made two appearances for the club before joining Fourth Division Chester in July 1963.

He spent four years at Chester, with the most memorable season being 1964/65 as Humes managed to score 20 first-team goals. This included a diving header to give Chester the lead at Manchester United in the FA Cup, although United recovered to win 2–1.

Humes moved to Barnsley in July 1967, where he ended his professional career with seven league appearances and one league goal. Barnsley gained promotion to Division Three as runners-up to Luton.

After spending a year playing for non-league side Chorley, Humes retired from playing and went on to work for housing department for Carlisle City Council.
