Player Profile – Paul Reid
Paul Mark Reid was born in Carlisle on 18 February 1982 and started his career with Carlisle making his debut in the 1-0 defeat at Hartlepool on 22 January 2000 and went on to make a further 18 appearances in the 1999/2000
On 30 June 2000 Reid joined Glasgow Rangers for £600,000 and stayed for three years. In 2000 Reid represented the England national under-19 football team at Under 19 level and was capped against Holland and was also capped by England at Under 20 level in 2001/02.
On 28 January 2002 Reid joined Preston on loan and scored in his only appearance in a 4-2 win against Sheffield Wednesday on 5 February 2002.
Reid then went on loan to Northampton, making his debut on New Years Day 2003 in a 2-1 victory against Barnsley at Oakwell. He made a total of 19 appearances for the club for the remainder of the season before a permanent move was made on 3 June for £100,000. His first league goal came in a 2-0 win at Yeovil on 25 August 2003 and was made captain scoring 3 goals from 33 appearances as a Northampton player.
During Paul Hart's first summer as the Barnsley manager, he quickly snapped up Reid on 14 July 2004 for a undisclosed fee. Reid spent most of his first season at Oakwell, flirting with the midfield and defence. He scored on his debut in 22 minutes with a 1-1 draw at Milton Keynes Dons on 7 August and had his most successful season to date in front of goal with three goals from 41 appearances and once in the Carling Cup which was on his fifth appearance in a 2-0 victory at Darlington on 24 August. His two other league goals came in a 2-2 draw at Swindon and a 4-1 win against Torquay. to become one of the most impressive players during the 2004/05 campaign.
When Andy Ritchie took charge of the Barnsley team, Reid was made captain at the beginning of the 2005/06 season which saw him go on to be one of the most successful captain's in Barnsley's recent history with them winning the League One Play Off Final penalties against Swansea at the Millennium Stadium on 27 May 2006. He made a further 33 league 33 appearances, Reid scored in a 5-3 win at Bradford in the FA Cup and the second leg in the play-off semifinal with the second in a 3-1 victory at Huddersfield to win 3-2 on aggregate. During the season he was red carded twice both were for two bookable offences and finished 1-1 at home to Brenford and away at Blackpool.
After 37 appearances in 2006/07 Reid signed a 2 year contract extension in May 2007 to remain at Barnsley, despite interest from several English Championship clubs, following Barnsley's successful relegation battle in 2006/07.
However, after losing his place in the team in 2007/08, he made just five appearances, with a 2-1 win against Darlington in the Carling Cup on 14 August 2007 and a red card four days later at Colchester. It was announced by manager Simon Davey on 8 January 2008 that Reid had been placed on the transfer list by Barnsley. His last appearance for Barnsley came in a 3-2 win at Southampton on 22 September 2007.
Reid went on loan to Carlisle United on 27 March 2008 until the end of the season as the Cumbrians looked for cover in the last 8 matches, but just made one appearance.
Reid was however released by Barnsley on 30 June 2008, after having his contract terminated by mutual consent; he had scored 3 goals from 114 league appearances.
On 1 July 2008 he signed a contract with Colchester United, joining on a free transfer and has made over 30 appearances for the club. His only league goal for the ‘U’s came in a 2-1 victory at Northampton on 29 November 2008. He made 56 league appearances; the last was a 4-0 FA Cup defeat at Swansea.
Reid joined Scunthorpe on 14 January and his debut was also a 4-0 defeat at Leeds. Reid scored twice in 74 appearances before rejoining Northampton in May 2013. He made 16 league appearances during 2013/14 and joined Conference side Eastleigh for the 2014/15 campaign.
