Player Profile – GUYLAIN N’DUMBU-NSUNGU
Guylain Ndumbu-Nsungu (GNN) was born in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo on 26 December 1982.
GNN started his career with French side Amines SC, staying for 2 years. He joined Sheffield Wednesday, initially on loan, in September 2003 and made his league debut in a 2-2 draw at home to Stockport on 13 September. His first goal came in an FA Cup tie at Scunthorpe in a 1-1 draw on 6 December and his first league goal came a week later in a 1-1 draw at Barnsley.
GNN scored a brace twice during the season in 2-1 wins at Rushed on 21 December and against Barnsley on 13 March 2004. He scored 9 league goals in 24 appearances making him the top scorer for the club and winning the Owls player of the season award for 2003/04. It was reported in the press at the time that Alan Pardew was ready for a bid of £1m for him from West Ham, but it never happened.
GNN joined the Owls permanently in July 2004 for a fee of £50,000, but found chances limited under new Owls manager Paul Sturrock. On 27 September 2004 GNN joined Preston on loan and made his debut in a 1-1 home draw against Plymouth. In his 6 appearances for PNE saw him only on the winning side once, this was in his fourth appearances as they beat forest 3-2. GNN’s final appearance was has a substitute for Andy Smith as PNE drew 1-1 at Coventry on 3 November. Later that month Preston signed Patrick Agyemang.
On return to Wednesday GNN made a further 4 appearances for the club. His last appearance was in a 4-0 win at Doncaster on 19 December. GNN had made 45 appearances, scoring 10 goals for the Owls.
On 21 January 2005 GNN joined Colchester on a free transfer and made his debut the following day, in a 0-0 draw at home to Luton as he replaced Joe Keith for the last 12 minutes.
GNN only made 8 appearances for the club with only two of these in the starting eleven. The first of these was at Tranmere on 12 February and scored his only league goal for Colchester as a sub three day later in a 3-1 home victory against Bournemouth. His last appearance was a 1-0 defeat at home to Brentford on 5 March.
He joined Darlington at the start of the 2005/06 season, where he scored 10 goals in 21 league appearances, scoring on his third, fourth and fifth appearance. He finished with a brace on his last appearance, his second goal a 90th minute penalty to beat Torquay 3-2 on 2 January 2006. He moved to Cardiff five days later, where he made 11 appearances including seven as substitute. He was released at the end of the season and signed by Gillingham. He scored his first goal for Gillingham away to Blackpool on 26 August 2006 in a game which ended 1–1. He struggled to hold down a place in the team during his first season at the club and was sent on loan to Bradford City the next season. He made his debut on 10 August 2007 and scored an equaliser to secure a 1–1 draw against Macclesfield. He played 18 league games, scoring six league goals for Bradford but his loan was not extended when it expired at the end of 2007 partly because of financial reasons. He returned to Gillingham but was immediately placed on the transfer list, and on 29 January 2008 he moved on a free transfer for a second spell at Darlington Injury delayed his debut back at Darlington, which came on 23 February 2008 against Bury when he scored a sixth minute penalty in a 2–1 victory. He played eight league games for Darlington, scoring three goals, and was a substitute in both legs of the play-off semi-finals against Rochdale. But after Darlington's defeat on penalties to Rochdale, he was released.
On 11 November 2010, Ndumbu-Nsungu was reported as training with Tamworth with a view to signing. He trained with Beaconsfield SYCOB in December 2010, though the signing failed to materialise due to problems with international clearance.
