Sale then scored again as a substitute in his next league match at Barnet a week later. Sale scored two goals in the 3-2 victory at Gillingham to give him 5 goals in 7 appearances but later missed four months of the season due to a hernia and toe injury. Sale returned for the last match of the season scoring in the 2-1 defeat at Scunthorpe. Preston reached the play offs but were defeated by Bury with Sale being substituted in both games to be replaced by Mick Conroy.
These were his final games for Preston as after 6 goals from 13 league appearances he moved to Mansfield for a fee of £50,000 on 31 July 1995. Sale scored 7 goals from 28 appearances in 1995/96 and played the second half of the season with a broken nose.
