Daniel (Danny) Cameron was born in Dundee on 9 November 1953.

The full-back started his career with Second Division Sheffield Wednesday and made his debut on 24 October 1973 in a 2-0 defeat at West Brom. Three days later he made his home debut with a 0-0 draw at Hillsborough against Notts County. On 2 February 1974 Cameron scored his first and  his only league goal in his career as the Owls lost 4-1 at Fulham. During the 1973/74 season Cameron made 17 League appearances.

Cameron did not make any first team appearances in 1974/75 until he went on loan to Third Division Colchester in February 1975. Cameron made his ‘U’s’s debut in a 2-1 defeat at Wrexham on 8 February, a week later he made his home debut with a 2-2 draw against Brighton. After another draw, this time at Grimsby, he was on the winning side for his final two matches of his loan spell. Both matches ended with 2-0 victories at Bournemouth on 1 March and at home to Swindon two days later.

On return to Wednesday he played in 6 matches during April but was on the losing side five times as the club was relegated to the Third Division. Cameron played 31 matches for the Owls his final match was a 1-1 draw at Crystal Palace on 27 September.

Cameron joined Third Division Preston and made his debut as a substitute in a 3-1 defeat at Hereford on 28 April. This was his only PNE match for the 1975/76 campaign.

The following season saw Cameron make is first six appearances for the club away from Deepdale and had to wait for his fifth match to register his first win with a 2-0 win at Reading on 13 November. Cameron finally made his home debut in a 2-2 draw in an FA Cup replay against Crewe on 23 November and went on to make 15 appearances during the season.

The 1977/78 season saw Cameron claim the number three shirt as he became a regular in the side. He made 40 league appearances during the season as the Lilywhites gained promotion to Division Two with a third place.

The following season saw Cameron continue the full back role with 36 appearances as PNE finished seventh and their highest position since the early 1960’s

Cameron’s 100th league appearance came in the 1979/80 season with a 1-1 draw at QPR on 13 October 1979.

Cameron made a total of 122 appearances for Preston, his last game was a 3-0 home defeat to Derby on 6 December 1980. At the end of the 1980/81 season saw PNE relegated and return to the Third Division.
