Joseph Gerard Craven was born in Preston on 28 December 1903.
The Centre-Half started his league career with Stockport and made his debut in a 0-0 draw at Stoke on 2 February 1924. His only other match that season was seven days later in the return match which Stoke won 1-0. After three appearances in 1924/25 Craven joined another Division Two side in Preston.
His only appearance for Preston in 1925/26 was to score the only goal at home to Wolves on 2 January 1926. In over 200 league appearances for six clubs this turned out to be is only goal in his career.
Craven was used sparingly over the next few seasons with two matches in 1926/27, none in 1927/28 and once in 1928/29.
Craven finally became a regular in 1929/30 making 33 league appearances and a further 28 in 1930/31. His final match for PNE after 65 league appearances was a 3-1 home defeat against Millwall on 7 February 1931.
For the 1931/32 season Craven joined Second Division Swansea and made his debut in a 2-0 home defeat to Leeds on 29 August 1930 and made 36 league appearances. For the next two seasons he was limited to just 13 league appearances.
The 1934/35 campaign saw Craven joined Second Division Port Vale and made his debut with a 2-0 home win over Sheffield United on 25 August 1934. Injuries hampered his progress with the Valiants making just 11 league appearances during the season. Although he didn’t register a win in his four matches away from Port Vale, he was unbeaten in his seven home matches, winning five of them. His final match for Port Vale was a 3-0 defeat at Bradford City on Boxing Day. This was a day after a 1-0 home win against the same opposition on Christmas Day.
The 1935/36 season saw Craven drop down a Division the join Division Three South side Newport, making 28 appearances, before returning to Lancashire with Accrington Stanley for 1936/37.
The 1936/37 campaign saw Craven make the most appearances in one season making 42 appearances. He made a further 15 appearances in 1937/38 but was only on the winning side three times. His final game was a 3-1 defeat at Chester on 7 May 1938. Craven then returned nearer to his roots to play for Leyland Motors.
Joe Craven passed away in 1972.
