Player Profile – Fred Ramscar
Frederick Thomas Ramscar was born on 24 January 1919 in Salford. The Inside Forward started his career with Glentoran in 1943 before joining Stockport as an amateur in 1944.
In 1 September 1945 Ramscar joined First Division Wolves and made his debut in the 1946/47 season and stayed for one season .
His debut was a 61 home win over Arsenal on 31 August 1946. He made 16 appearances during the season as Wolves finished third. His only goal for the club came in a 4-1 win at home to Preston on 29 March 1947 on his penultimate game. His last match was a 3-1 defeat at Manchester United a week later.
On 1 October 1947 Ramscar joined Division 3 South side QPR. His debut was a 1-0 defeat at Ipswich on 25 October 1947; his first win was on his next game with a 2-0 home win over Bristol City on 1 November. He again scored one goal in 16 league appearances as QPR won the title. His first goal for the club came in a 3-0 home win over First Division Stoke in the FA Cup on 24 January 1948.
After 3 goals in 35 league appearances Ramscar joined Preston on 1 November 1949. His PNE debut came in a 0-0 draw at home to Chesterfield on 5 November. His first goals for the Lilywhites were a brace in a 3-2 defeat at Cardiff on 10 December. He scored 3 goals in 14 appearances during the 1949/50 season for North End.
He made 5 further appearances in 1950/51, netting in the 4-1 win at Deepdale against Chesterfield on 6 September 1950. His final game for PNE came in a 2-0 defeat at West Ham on 18 November.
Ramscar joined Northampton from Division Three south and only missed 3 matches in 3 seasons and was an ever present in 1951/52. He scored the only goal on debut in a 1-0 win at Aldershot on 18 August. Ramscar scored 23 league goals and one FA Cup goal during the season. This included a goal in 7 consecutive matches, netting 9 times. He scored his first hat-trick in a 5-3 win at home to Bournemouth on 15 April.
Ramscar scored 22 league goals in 1952/53 and scored his second hat-trick against the same opposition with a 5-1 win over Bournemouth at home on 20 December. In total he made 139 appearances for Northampton netting 55 goals.
Ramscar joined Millwall on 1 September 1954 and scored 5 goals in 30 league matches. His final match was a 4-1 defeat at Coventry on 12 April 1955.
Fred Ramscar passed away in 2003.
