Player Profile – John Hampton
John William Hampton was born in Wolverhampton in 1901. The goalkeeper started his career with his own town club and spent his career at Wolves as the understudy to Noel George.
Hampton made his Wolves debut with a 2-0 defeat at Fulham on 28 August 1922. He made 18 appearances during the 1922/23 season and had to wait until his tenth match before the first victory with a 3-1 win against Stockport on 11 November. He kept 2 clean sheets during the season and his final matches of the season was on Christmas Day and Boxing Day against Coventry with 7-1 and 2-1 defeats. The season ended with Wolves being relegated from Division Two.
Hampton didn’t play in the first team for the next two seasons as George was an ever present. In 1925/26 Hampton made 17 appearances with 4 clean sheets. His final season was in 1926/27 when he made 14 appearances and 2 clean sheets. His final league match was a 2-0 win over South Shields on 25 April 1927 and had made 49 league appearances for Wolves.
Hampton joined Derby and made 8 appearances with 3 clean sheets in the 1927/28 season, his debut was a 3-0 defeat at Bury on 18 February 1928. His next two seasons Hampton just made a further 4 appearances, his final match was a 6-3 defeat at Sheffield Wednesday on 22 April 1930, the day before saw Derby beat the Owls 4-1 at home with Hampton in goal.
For 1930/31 season Hampton joined Preston and started well with a 5-0 victory over Southampton on 30 August 1930 and was unbeaten in his first 11 matches for the club. Hampton kept 9 clean sheets and made 37 league appearances during the season. His last game for the Lilywhites was a 2-1 home win over Everton on 3 May 1931.
John Hampton died in 1939.
