Player Profile – Michael Bennett

Michael Bennett was born in Bolton on 24 December 1962. The full back started his career with his home town club making his debut in a 2-2 draw at Manchester City on 29 March 1980. He made 8 appearances as Bolton was relegated to Division Two.

Bennett only scored two goals in his career; the first came in the Trotters 2 -1defeat at Newcastle on 31 January 1980. He became a regular mainly in the number 3 shirt for Bolton making 35 league appearances in 1981/82.

His final game for Bolton was a 3-0 defeat at Crystal Palace on 22 February 1983 after 65 league appearances. Bolton was relegated at the end of the season. and Bennet suffered relegation in the next three seasons.

On 1 June 1983 Bennett joined  First Division Wolves and made his debut in a 1-0 defeat at Southampton on 1 October.  Three days later he made his home debut in a 3-2 League Cup first leg defeat against Preston.

His stay was a short one and made a total of 8 appearances including the two League Cup matches against PNE and was on the losing side on all but one match which was a 1-1 home draw to Aston Villa on 23 October. His final match for Wolves was a 3 -0 home defeat to West Ham on 12 November 1983.

In March 1984, Bennett joined Second Division Cambridge and made his debut in a 2-0 home defeat against Cardiff on 10 March. In his fourth match he suffered his only red card in a 1-1 draw at Crystal Palace on 1 April. He had to wait until his eighth match to record his first win in a 1-0 win at home to Newcastle on 28 April and just won two in eleven. Both clubs that Bennett played for in 1983/84 suffered relegation from their respective decisions.

Cambridge suffered back to back relegations in 1984/85 as they finished bottom in Division Three as Bennett made his most appearances with the club in one season with 34 league appearances.  His 76th and final game for Cambridge was a 1-0 home defeat to Scunthorpe on 15 March 1985.

After a spell in Finland, Bennett joined Bradford City on a non-contract basis but didn’t make an appearance.

In September Bennett joined Fourth Division Preston and gained his only promotion in his career and made the most appearances in one season with 42 league matches. His debut was a 1-1 draw at Lincoln on 6 September. His first win came on his home debut as a substitute a week later in a 2-1 victory over Hereford. His second and last career goal came in a 2-1 win at Southend on f 3 January 1987.

He made 34 appearances in 1987/88 and his last match was a 6-0 defeat at Reading on 17 February 1980. In total Bennett made 86 league appearances for the Lilywhites.

Bennett joined Fourth Division Carlisle and made his debut as a substitute in a 3-0 defeat at Torquay on 27 October. His home debut came on his first starting eleven appearance in a 1-1 draw against former club Preston in the Football League Trophy. His final game for the Cumbriains was the following season was a 6-2 defeat at Lincoln against Lincoln on 11 May 1991 after 24 appearances.

Bennett joined non-league Northwich Victoria in 1992 and Witton Albion in 1993.

He had 10 years at Bolton Wanderers FC Academy during the Premier League years also coaching for their International Football schools in Australia, USA, Canada and Europe. Bennett was at the Centre of Excellence Manager at Yeovil Town FC for 1 year before Joining Manchester United. Bennett spent two years in Mumbai India for Manchester United Soccer School till November 2013. He then visited Norway, Japan, Indonesia, Bahrain, Qatar and Taiwan coaching for the Manchester United Soccer School before in September 2014. He was offered the position of Head Coach for United in Baku, Azerbaijan, starting and developing an academy for 64 elite footballers.
