Player Profile – Jack Nelson

 

John Henry ‘Jack’ Nelson  was born in Chorley on 15 March 1906. The central defender started his career with Preston and made his debut in a 3-3 win at Middlesbrough on 1 September 1928. Nelson made 4 appearances in 1928/29 and a further 8 in 1929/30. In this season he was only involved in one win with a 5-1 victory over Stoke. His last match of the season for him was the 6-4 home defeat to Blackpool on 19 October.

After a further 13 appearances in 1930/31 he made his most appearances in one season in 1931/32 and scored his first league goals. Nelson made 38 appearances and scored his first goal in a 3-2 defeat at Wolves on 26 September with a further goal on Boxing Day in a 2-1 home win over Burnley.

He made 8 appearances in 1932/33, his last match after 71 league appearances for PNE was a 6-2 home defeat to Tottenham on 8 October 1932.

Nelson joined First Division Wolves and his debut saw a 2-0 home defeat to Sunderland on 19 November. He had to wait until his fifth match before he tasted victory with a 3-1 away win on Boxing Day at Aston Villa. The return match the following day saw Villa get revenge with a w-2 win at Wolves. His first goal came in a 2-1 win at Arsenal on 18 March. He made 22 appearances for Wolves during the season.

His goals for Wolves in London continued in 1933/34 with a goal on his third appearance in the season in a 5-2 defeat at Chelsea on 2 September and scored in a 3-2 defeat at Arsenal on 24 March 1934. This season saw his most appearances with Wolves with 31 league appearances.

His final goal for Wolves was scored in North London with a 3-1 defeat at Tottenham on 8 September. Nelson’s last match for Wolves came in a 5-0 defeat at Manchester City on 4 May. He had made 74 league appearances for Wolves.

The 1935/36 season saw Nelson join Third Division South side Luton. His dabut was a 3-0 defeat at Clapham Orient on 31 August and had to wait for his fifth match for a victory with the 2-0 defeat of QPR at home.  The next 14 matches saw Luton win 13 and draw one with Nelson in defence. He made 37 league appearances as  Luton finished second. The following season Nelson made 41 league appearances as Luton won the Third Division South title.

He made a further 37 appearances in Division Two for Luton and made the last appearance for Luton with a 2-1 defeat at Millwall on 17 December 1939. He didn’t score for the club but made 134 appearances in the League.

Jack Nelson died in 1986.
