Player Profile – John Kendall
John William Kendall was born in Broughton, Lincolnshire on 9 October 1905 and played as a goalkeeper.
Kendall started his career with Lincoln in Division Three North, making his debut in a 0-0 home draw against Halifax on 2 September 1922. He made 37 appearances during the 1922/23 season and a further 34 appearances in 1923/24. His last appearance was a 2-0 home win over Walsall on 5 April 1924.
The same month Kendall joined First Division Everton and his only appearance of the season was a 4-2 home victory over Tottenham on 19 April 1924.
In the following two seasons Kendall made a further 20 appearances, his final match for Everton was a 3-2 home defeat to Arsenal on 13 March 1926.
He didn’t make any appearances in 1925/26 but the following season he had joined Preston and made his debut for the Division Two side in a 1-1 draw at Clapham Orient on 22 October 1927. His second and final appearance was 7 days later in a 3-0 home defeat to Chelsea.
The 1928/29 season saw Kendall re-join Lincoln for the second time to make a further 46 appearances, his last match was a 3-2 defeat at Southport on 8 March 1930.
That week he returned to Division One with Sheffield United with his Blades debut being a 2-2 draw at Leeds on 15 March. He made six appearances for Sheffield United during the remainder of the season. The results were mixed which included an 8-1 defeat at Arsenal on 12 April and on his next match saw a 5-1 win at Manchester United on 3 May.
Kendall became the regular goalkeeper in 1930/31 as he made 35 appearances but only managed 3 clean sheets as the Blades finished in 15th position.
The following season saw Kendall make 21 appearances with 5 clean sheets as Sheffield United finished 7th in Division One.
With his final two seasons, his appearances were limited with 10 league appearances in 1932/33 and 8 in 1933/34. His and 80th last match was a 2-0 defeat at Arsenal on 5 May 1934 as the Blades finished bottom and relegation from Division One.
Jack Kendall passed away in 1961.
