Matthew David Carrick was born in Evenwood on 5 December 1946 and began his career at Ronnie Allan’s Wolves after signing in December 1964 but didn’t make a first team appearance at Molineux.

He joined Jack Rowley’s Wrexham in Division Four and made his debut in a 0-0 draw at home to Exeter on 20 August 1966. His first goal came on his seventh appearance in the First Round of the FA Cup with a 3-2 win over Chesterfield on 26 October. Carrick’s first league goal came in a 4-2 win over Rochdale on 10 December.

Carrick scored three goals in 24 league games in the 1966/67 and 1967/68 campaigns. His final game was a 2-1 home win over Aldershot on 16 March 1967. New manager Alvan Williams allowed him to leave Wrexham and Carrick moved onto Northern Premier League side Altrincham. He remained at Moss Lane for the first half of the 1968/69 season, before he signed with Port Vale in January 1969.

Carrick made his Vale debut in a 1-0 defeat at Darlington on 1 February 1969.He played in sixteen consecutive Fourth Division games his only goal was on his seventh appearance in a 4–1 win over Brentford at Vale Park on 15 March, before being released in the summer.

He moved on to Cheshire County League sides Stalybridge Celtic and Witton Albion, before returning to the Football League with Preston in 1973.

He played two Second Division games at a substitute for the Lilywhites with a 1-1 draw at Oxford on 17 November and a 2-2 draw at Deepdale against Luton a week later.

Carrick joined Walter Joyce’s Rochdale and made his debut in a 4-0 defeat at Aldershot at 13 March. His first goals for the Dale were a brace in a 3-3 draw at Cambridge on 6 April. He made 10 appearances but was not on the winning side once as Rochdale finished bottom of Division Three in 1973/74.

Carrick scored four goals in 26 league games during his two season stay at Spotland, his final match was a 3-0 defeat at Brentford on 8 March 1975. He then returned to Northern Premier League side Altrincham.

David Carrick died on 1 July 1989.
