Player Profile: Darren Patterson
Darren James Patterson was born on 15 October 1969. He began his playing career with West Brom around the time of their relegation from the First Division in 1986, but failed to make a first-team appearance and was signed by Bryan Hamilton for Wigan in April 1989 on a free transfer.
Patterson made his debut in 1989/90 season, scoring once in 29 appearances; the following season he hit the net 4 times in 28 appearances. In his final season for the club Patterson scored once from 40 appearances.
On 1 July 1992 Patterson joined Crystal Palace for a fee of £225,000. He didn't make a league appearance in his first two seasons for the Eagles. His debut came on 24 August 1994 in a 0-0 draw at Norwich. He scored once in 22 appearances as Palace suffered relegation from the Premier League. At the end of a dramatic season in which Palace also reached the semi-finals of both major domestic cup competitions he was sent off in the FA Cup semi-final for fighting with Manchester United midfielder Roy Keane. Whilst with Crystal Palace, Patterson won his first of 17 Northern Ireland caps
In August 1995 Patterson joined Luton for a fee of £230,000 and made 56 league appearances at Kenilworth Road he endured the disappointment of relegation from Division One in his first season and playoff defeat in Division Two during his second.
During his spell with the Hatters he joined Preston on loan in October 1996. He appeared in two match which both ended in defeat. His debut was a 4-3 home defeat to Peterborough on 5 October and a 1-0 defeat at Stockport a week later.
He left on a Bosman free transfer in the Summer of 1998 to join Dundee United. He returned south of the border in December 2000 when he signed for Division Three strugglers York making 6 appearances. Fourteen months later he signed for his final club Oxford making 20 appearances. He scored his first goal in over 5 years with a 1-1 draw against Stoke in February 2001 His last appearance came in a 1-0 win against former club York on 1 April 2002
After retiring from the game Patterson remained at Oxford as youth team coach. He served as caretaker manager of the club following the departure of Graham Rix, although he was ultimately overlooked for the job in favour of Ramon Diaz. He was finally appointed manager of the club on a full-time basis in March 2006 following the departure of Brian Talbot. However, no sooner had Patterson been appointed than he lost the job to Jim Smith following the sale of the club by Firoz Kassam to Nick Merry. Patterson managed the club for only eight days, and in doing so became one of the shortest-serving managers in the history of the English league.
In December 2006, Patterson was offered the vacant manager's job at Brentford however, caretaker manager Scott Fitzgerald was appointed on a permanent basis after Patterson declined their terms.
After becoming first team coach in April 2007, he was appointed Oxford United's manager once again on 9 November 2007 after Jim Smith resigned. He was sacked on 30 November 2008 following a poor start to the 2008/09 season.
In May 2009 Patterson was appointed Head of Youth at Bristol Rovers. In May 2010 it was announced after the sacking of Lennie Lawrence he would assist Paul Trollope and following the departure of Trollope on 15 December he became caretaker manager.
