Player Profile – Bobby Foster

Robert John (Bobby) Foster was born in Sheffield on 19 July 1929. Foster joined Chesterfield in August 1947 and made his debut at the end of the 1948/49 season with a 1-0 win at Barnsley on 7 May 1949. He just made 3 further league appearances in the following 2 seasons before joining First Division Preston in January 1951.

Foster made his PNE debut in a 2-0 win at Burnley on 25 December 1951, his first league goal came on his next appearance on his home debut 4 days later scoring the only goal against West Brom. The 1951/52 season saw Foster score twice in 17 league appearances.

The 1952/53 season saw the Lilywhites finish runners-up to Arsenal, Foster missed 6 months and returned scoring in a 2-0 win at Bolton on 25 March. Foster hit a purple patch scoring 3 goals in his next 4 appearances in 12 days, finishing with 4 goals in 11 appearances during the season.

His most productive season in front of goal was in 1953/54 with 15 goals from 28 league appearances, this included a hat-trick on his second league appearances with a 4-0 win at Middlesbrough on 22 August 1953.

The following season saw 8 goals in his first 10 matches including a brace on a 7-1 home win against Cardiff on 1 September 1954. He netted a further 2 goals with a 3-1 win against Blackpool at Deepdale on 26 February 1955. Foster ended the season with 13 goals from 28 appearances.

Foster made 15 appearances with 5 goals in 1955/56 and just made 2 appearances with 2 goals in 1956/57. Both goals came in his last match for the Lilywhites with a 3-0 home win against Leeds on 23 February 1957.

He didn’t make an appearance in 1957/58 and joined Second Division Rotherham in May 1958. Foster only made one appearance for Rotherham in a 4-1 home defeat to Middlesbrough on 11 September 1958.

Bobby Foster died in 2006.
