Player Profile Jimmy Melia
James Melia was born in Darlington on 2 April 1874. The full back started his career with the Owls who was called The Wednesday at the time but spent most of his time in the reserves. He made his debut in the 1896/97 season. In two seasons which the Owls finished sixth and fifth respectively in Division One, Melia made seven appearances.
Melia joined Tottenham, who was playing in the Southern League, as cover for Scottish player Harry Erentz. He was selected for the Southern League against the Southern Amateurs and joined Preston for the start of the 1901/02 season.
He only made two appearances for Preston; his debut on the opening day of the 1901/02 season was in a 3-1 defeat at West Brom on 7 September. For the next six matches John McMahon took the number two shirt before making his final appearance in a 2-0 defeat at Chesterfield on 26 October. McMahon regained the shirt after that match for the rest of the season.
He was taken ill and died at the age of 30 in February 1905.
