James Adcock was introduced to refereeing by his father David and took his first refereeing course in 2000, at the age of 16; he was promoted to the Football League National List for 2011/12. At the age of 27 to became one of the youngest officials in the League.

He received confirmation of his promotion soon after returning from the States, where he took charge of the biggest international youth tournament in America. The opportunity to referee was by invitation only as the organisers nominated two Football League referees and one from the Conference which was James Adcock.

Prior to this season he had refereed one League Two match as Wycombe beat Macclesfield 1-0 on 26 February 2011. His final game last season was the Blue Square Premier Play-Off final between AFC Wimbledon and Luton.

His first match as a Football League Referee was a 1-1 draw between Oxford and Bradford on 13 August 2011.

In August 2014 he got his first taste of international football at The Nordic Tournament with Chorley born Michael Salisbury. Both were the English representatives at the U17 competition in Denmark James Adcock was chosen to referee the Final on Saturday with Michael Salisbury as assistant after impressive performances during their first three matches - capping a “hugely beneficial” week for the pair.

James Adcock has now gone 34 matches without producing a red card. His last was on 14 January 2015 after a spell of 8 in 12 matches.

His last Charlton match was a 1-1 draw at Brentford on 9 August 2014. His last match was a 0-0 draw between Reading & Burnley on 13 February.
