Player Profile - James Dickie
James Dickie was born in Montrose on 22 September 1903. He started his career with Fochabers in 1922 and Buckie Thistle in 1923.
For the 1924/25 season Dickie moved south of the Border by joining Preston. He didn’t play in the relegation season of that season and only made 3 appearances in 1925/26 all in the number 11 shirt. His debut was a 1-0 home win over Wolves on 2 January1926. Dickie had to wait until 25 March for his second appearance scoring in a 2-1 victory at Deepdale against Fulham. His final game two days later was a 3-0 defeat at Port Vale.
After joining Forres Mechanics in 1926, he returned to England with Third Division North side New Brighton for the beginning of the 1927/28 season. This was the season he made the most appearances in one season and reached double figures in goals for the only time of the career. His debut was a 3-0 defeat at Darlington on 27 August, four days later he got his first victory in a 3-1 win against Doncaster His first goal came on his sixth appearance with a 3-1 win over Halifax. Dickie made 42 league appearances, netting 11 goals which 5 coming in the last 7 matches of the season.
His final match was the same opposition and result as his debut with a 3-0 defeat at Darlington of 24 November in the FA Cup. In total Dickie scored 19 league goals in 83 appearances.
Dickie joined Second Division Bristol City and made his Robins debut in a 2-1defeat at Reading on 1 December. His first victory came on his home debut with a 1-0 win against former club Preston. Dickie netted his first Robins goal on his sixth appearance with a 3-2 defeat at home to West Brom on Boxing Day. His first brace came in a 5-0 win against Millwall on 18 March, finishing the season with 3 goals from 25 league appearances as the club ended the campaign in 20th position.
His final season for the Robins saw the club finish 20th again. His only goal of the season came in his last home match with a 4-1 victory over Nottingham Forest. His final game for Bristol City was a 2-2 draw at Preston on 3 May and had made a total of 48 league matches for the Robins.
Dickie joined non-league sides Chester in 1930 and Macclesfield in 1931. He returned to the Football League in 1932/33 by re-joining Chester who were now in the second season in the Football League. Dickie just made one appearance for Chester with a 2-1 defeat at Southport. In September he joined New Brighton for the second time and scored 4 goals in 27 appearances with this spell with the club. His last league appearance came in a 2-0 home defeat to Wrexham on 6 May 1933.
James Dickie passed away in 1960.
