The new manager seems to have grasped one fundamental problem and that is Preston need to attack more and score more goals if they are to progress from the Billy Davies era. Throughout the past two seasons Preston have pressed well and defended to a high standard but could not convert enough chances to push them up into the automatic spots.
Simpson is certainly on the look out for a new forward to partner Nugent and it is thought that with Danny Pugh and Simon Whaley he will play with two out and out attacking wingers unlike under Davies when a forward was always played on the left. It should be an exciting game come Saturday with North End fans pondering if they can keep up their terrific home record of only four defeats in two seasons at Deepdale. The main cause for concern will be lack of experience and with Wednesday expected to bring a big following it could be a tough opener.
Hopefully Simpson will start off with a win in what is expected to be a season of change at Deepdale.
