Attacking Intent Stalled

Alex Neil was set to take Preston into a brave new world with attacking football and care free abandon. Whilst pre-season looked positive his philosophy seems to be stuttering in the first three league games of the season.

There has been a symmetry surrounding the first three games of the season. North End have scored one penalty, conceded one penalty and wedged in between was a goalless draw at Leeds.

It would be unfair to suggest Preston have not had chances but their attack has been blunted and comparisons will be made to the attacking flair provided by Mcgeady last season.

On a positive note Tommy Spurr and Paul Huntington appear to have formed a solid partnership at the back. It appears that it may take time for the Simon Grayson approach to wear off.

North End made one change with Pearson suspended for the game at Derby. Ben Davies played in the holding role and filled in to a reasonable level.

Nugent had the best chances for Derby. Maxwell and Fisher blocked attempts before the home side were awarded a penalty before the hour mark after Cunningham was adjudged to have fouled his opponent in the box.

Vydra converted from the spot and the rest is pretty much history. Changes were made but for the second Tuesday in succession North End were left frustrated. Cunnignham alarmingly hobbled off the field before the end of play.

It is a difficult month for Preston and the defence has held firm but there will be concern that there has been no goal from open play with Johnson the only scorer from the spot thus far.

Harrop, when fully fit, should add some zest whilst Madvidi should inject some pace and creativity but Preston may have to allow some time for the nw players to bed in.
