Preston started with several youngsters including Hinchcliffe in goals, Beattie and Hibbert along with Nugent. Lewis Neal started on the left and scored a solo goal to set the ball rolling. Hibbert added a second from a Neal cross before Nugent finally got on the score sheet after spurning several opportunities. North End also hit the bar in the first half before Neal made it a double for himself before the end of the first forty five.
The side was revamped at half time with Sami Mawene playing at right back and Agyemang making his first start. The Ghanain striker missed three opportunities within the first five minutes of the half before Dichio slotted a shot home. Sedgwick then added a double to seal a comprehensive win.
