Irvine named a strong side with Jason Jarrett getting another start in midfield and Joe Anyinsah who spent time at Carlisle last season played. There was no place in the squad for Hawley as Mellor was hte only recognised striker starting with Ormerod on the bench.

One time Preston target Scott Dobie but the home side ahead before Mellor equalised with a header. The scores were level at the break before Whaley scored soon after half time only for Dobie to score a second for the hosts to end the match all square.

Preston now travel to Motherwell where they will play in mid week at Fir Park.
