The first half was very lacklustre on a dry pitch which looked as if it hadn't been cut since the end of the season. Hibbert was pulled out of the starting line up just before the match leaving Simon Whaley to play off Dichio. The big man had the best chance of the first half heading onto the bar.
The second half saw many changes with Joe Anyinsah looking meatier than last season replacing Sedgwick on the right with Nugent taking over from Dichio.
The pair teamed up well as Nugent bagged three simple goals and also had one disallowed for offside. Anyinsah netted and the game was comfortable for the visitors despite Roddick pulling one back to make it 2-1.
Simpson looked pleased with the performance of Nugent up front and the fans got to see the return of Andy Lonergan in the second half with Danny Pugh playing the second half at left back.
Noticeable absentees were Carlo Nash, Patrick Agyemang and Jason Jarrett as Sami Mawene played the full ninety minutes in midfield.
Preston now travel to Bamber Bridge on Tuesday.
