City End Cup Dream

The psychological barrier remains as in recent years Everton, Chelsea, Middlesborough and now Manchester City have all knocked Preston out in the fifth round of the FA Cup. Preston have not bene to the quarter final for over 40 years and have failed to beat a top flight team for almost three decades.

Simpson reverted to 4-4-2 with Soley given a debut in for the suspended Wilson. Sedgewick and Mckenna played inmidfield, Whaley out right with Ricketts partnering Nugent up front.

Preston started the game brightly and took the lead from a corner. Ricketts headed at goal but Weaver could only parry to Nugent who hammered home from close range.

Preston were on top and should have coverted the possession they were given. Sedgewick was played through but his lack of pace meant the City defence was able to recover.

Ricketts was played through minutes later by Mckenna but his shot was saved with the rebound being cleared. Ricketts later went off in what was thought to be a cheekbone injury as he was rushed to hospital.

City came back in the game and took full advantage as Corradi was allowed space. He blasted a superb shot past Lonergan which rebounded off the post to Ball who smashed home inside the box.

The goal saw a turnabout in the game with Preston allowing city to play. gyemang returned from the bench for Ricketts but the front two were isolated in the second period as City took control. Barton was allowed time and space but Lonergan was not forced to make any saves of note.

As the game was heading for a replay a ball in the box wasn't dealt with and ricocheted off Matt Hill into the gaping net to give City the lead. As Mellor came on for Whaley Preston pushed for the equaliser but were killed off by a superb late strike from Ireland.
