Cunningham left Preston to play top flight football after being a good servant at Deepdale. There was no ill feeling when he left but things have probably not gone as well as he expected. The left back has been loaned out and now appears to be on the way out permanently from Cardiff in the summer.
Preston have problems at left back and have muddled through. Hughes is first choice but has been found wanting. Earl has stepped in but at times still looks out of his depth at Championship level and Rafferty has had a torrid season.
The signing of Cunningham until the end of the season is interesting. Cardiff are apparently contributing half of his wages. A fully fit Cunningham is a step above what Preston already have but he has suffered a number of horrendous injuries over recent years.
If Cunningham can rediscover any of the form he showed in his first stint at Preston then the left hand side of the Preston defence will be much more secure.
