The left sided defender was initially signed on loan from Cardiff in the January transfer window. This was then converted into a short term deal until the end of the season when he would be out of contract.
Preston knew what they were getting with Cunningham given that he had spent several years at the club earlier in his career. He is a consistent performer in the Championship but does have a history of injuries.
The signing in January seemed to be sensible as Preston were struggling in the left back area. Hughes has not performed at his best this season. Earl still seemed to lack confidence at Championship level and Rafferty was found wanting.
Cunningham has made the defence more solid on the left hand side. He seems ideal for when Preston play with wing backs as shown with his performance against Blackburn.
He has missed games through injury and I expect Preston will know that they are unlikely to get a full season out of Cunningham but he is a positive addition to the squad.
