Simon Grayson made changes from the midweek win away at Bournemouth. Preston reverted to a 4-4-2 formation with Baptiste at right back, Wright partnering Clarke in the centre. Gallagher and Brown played in midfield with Makienok and Hughill up front.
Preston took an early lead in the game within the first ten minutes. McGeady had a shot from outside the area. The keeper was moving to save when it took a wicked defelction off Hughill's shins and into the net.
The game was tense with Wigan having much of the ball but Maxwell, on his league debut, had very little to do by way of significant saves. Preston did have chances to increase their lead but failed to do so.
It was a match before the Sky television cameras which was very low on quality from both sides. It was an important win to boost Preston's position up the table but unless something changes drastically both of these sides will be in the bottom third come the run in.
