Doyle has had a turbulent last couple of years. He caught the eye of former boss Simon Grayson when playing for Chesterfield. He had a sensational time in League One before being snapped up by Cardiff.
Preston managed to agree a loan deal for Doyle from Cardiff when they returned to the Championship. He had an awful season at Preston but Grayson decided to offer the strker a three year deal.
After being sent off for fighting with team mate Beckford he was loaned out to Portsmouth for the second half of last season and his days seemed to be numbered.
When Neil took charge Doyle remained on the fringes. He was linked with Plymouth and his former boss Paul Cook, now at Wigan, was also interested.
Doyle choose to move to Oldham although reports in South London suggest Charlton were also looking to sign the player on transfer deadline day.
It appears that League One is Doyle's level as he had a successful first game at Oldham scoring on his debut. I suspect that if he is sccessful then Preston would be inclined to allow the forward to leave for good.
