The frontman has less than one year left on his contract and Preston were willing to sell for a fee in the region of £300,000. Reports north of the border suggest this figure was met by Aberdeen and Peterborough.
Both clubs were then unable to agree terms with the striker which is somewhat surprising as he was not the highest earner at Preston who have a relatively modest wage bill.
Doyle is currently frozen out of the plans for pre-season and it is hoped a deal can be struck before the start of the season.
