North End faced their toughest few days of the season so far with a home game at recently relegated Watford before travelling to take on Wolves in the League Cup Second Round.
Somehow Preston made it five consecutive games in the league without conceding a goal. On the flip side they have only managed to score once during that same period thanks to a fabulous Potts strike at Luton.
It is still unclear how the Watford game remained goalless at full time. North End created chances but were unable to covnert with the Watford keeper denying the home side.
The visitors also had good chances. In the first half a poor finish in a one on one situation gave Woodman an easy save to make and in the second period the striker blasted high and wide when it was easier to score.
Despite the league form Preston came unstuck in the cup against a strong Wolves side who took a two goal lead into the break. Preston were undone down their right hand flank and a simple cross was tapped in at the back post by Jimenez.
Traore doubled the lead before half time with a superb strike and the hosts also had a penalty saved by Cornell when really they should have extended their lead.
Changes at half time gave Preston some impetus and Woodburn halved the defecit but Preston could not find the elusive equaliser and bow out of the competition.
Preston now travel to Cardiff at the weekend hoping to break their early goal drought.
