Grayson changed his line up and formation with King repalcing the injured Tom Clarke in the centre of defence. Laird replaced Buchanan at left back whilst the midfield of Welsh, Kilkenny, Keane and Gallagher functioned in a diamond behind Garner and Craig Davies.
Preston bossed the first half an hour and took the leader through a Joe Garner header. As is standard for Preston the visitors were allowed back in the game.
Just before the break Rudd made a save from a distant shot but Tranmere scored moments later after sloppy defending allowed Taylor to score from close range.
The start of the second half was nervy for five minutes or so before Preston managed to break and Garner fired in his second giving Preston the lead back.
North End should have scored more and killed the game off. Garner looked tired when he fired straight at the keeper. Craig Davies was one on one when the keeper saved well amongst other opportunities for the visitors.
Brentford and Wolves were not in action due to postponements and Orient went down to a late a late winner at Peterbough so Preston managed to haul back some lost ground on the top three. North End face Orient next Saturday where they will be hoping to reel in the London side.
