Harsh Lessons For Preston

Grayson played it safe as usual with five atthe back. Vermijl and Cinningham filled the wing back slots as Clarke, Huntington and Wright played in the centre.

An injury to Gallagher meant Kilkenny played in midfield alongside Welsh and Johnson. New signings May and Doyle were left on the bench as Keane partnered Garner up front.

Preston have to get more streetwise f they are going to claim points off the promotion chasing sides. Derby scored to first half goals from two chances before sitting back and soaking up the pressure for the remainder of the game.

The first goal was avoidable and poor defending all round. Russell was in his own half surging forward. Clarke raced towards him with the intention of tackling but pulled out at the last minute. Russell then outpaced Clarke on the outside before crossing.

If Clarke had made the tackle he would have either won the ball or committed a foul thus stoping the run either way. He was outpaced but the cross was aimed for Mratin in the middle.

Incredibly both Huntington and Wright moved towards the ball when the cross came in leaving Martin free at the back post. He controlled nad slotted through Pickford's legs.

Martin then scored his second from a superb free kick curling over the wall and beyond Pickford from just outside the box. Preston don't often come back from behind and they didn't look likely here in the first forty five.

Before the hour mark May and Doyle were introduced as Preston pured forward. Chances were created including Garner hitting the post but North End had to wait late for an equaliser.

There was a horrible clash of heads between Biard and Garner which meant a lengthy dealy resulting in the Derby player being transferred to hospital where he was later relased.

Johnson managed to pull a goal back for his second of the campaign with a curling left foot shot from the edge of the box. Preston then threw everything forward but Derby were not for breaking.

Preston remain on five points. It may well have been that if Derby were in the modd they could have scored more but oor defending meant Preston were out of the game before starting. It is such a fine margin in this dicision.

North End now face Bristol City on Tuesday evening at Deepdale as last season's League One winners have also encountered a ifficult start to the season.
