Hugill Blows Preston's Main Chance

Wigan are in trouble in the relegtion zone and played like a side battling to stay in the Chmpionship but Preston lacked any quality to break down the home team with chances at a premium for both sides.

The main opportunity came for Preston within the first ten minutes. Robinson was tripped in the box and a penalty was awarded. It was only Prestpn's second of the season. Johnson scored the only oher penalty but he was on the bench so up stepped Hugill.

In fairness, Hugill doesn't look like a man who has taken man penalties in his time. He is used by Grayson as a taret man and has had a decent season by his standards. He has missed numerous one on one chances and his gal tally includes a deflected goal against Wigan in th hoe game.

Hugill is clearly not a man for one on one situations. He hit the penalty slightly off centre where Gilks made an easy save. There was no force behind the penalty and it was surprising that Gilks parried the ball right back to Hugill who fluffed the rebound.

The question always returns to Preston and what a quality striker could do. If the penalty was converted then the game would have opened up.Preton miss that quality touch up front.

Whilst this maybe Hugill's most lucrative scoring season much of that has cme down to the creativity of Mcgeady. Next season will prove a lot harder if the Irish winger does not renew a deal at Deepdale.

The rest of the game was nondescript. Beckford, Barkhuizen and Makienok all came off the bench but were little improvement on the starting eleven.

Wigan's best chance came at the death when Bogle broke through but a last ditch tackle blocke his shot and the teams had to settle for a more than forgettable goalless draw.
