In Preston's first season back at Championship level they have generally got out of games with a result that they deserved. There has been the odd game such as Wolves and Nottingham Forest where the performance didn't match the result and Huddersfield is now added to that list.
Grayson was forced into a change with Ben Pearson suspended for two games but he got his tactics incredibly wrong. From being a very defensive unit Preston had a soft centre and despite an attacking intent they were always on the backfoot.
The simple option would have been to replace Pearson with Welsh in a like for like scenario. Instead Grayson viewed Huddersfield as a team that could be attacked given their league position.
Gallagher started in central midfield with Browne which meant a very soft centre with no bite. Robinson and Reach started out wide whilst Hughill was up front alongside Garner.
The plan seemed straight forward. For the first time in a long time we had two out and out wingers with a target man in Hughill. The trouble was actually winning the ball in the first place.
It took around 15 minutes for Preston to realise that Huddersfield liked playing out from the back. At that point Preston started to press high forcing the keeper to kick long which did cause the visitors problems.
Huddersfield had the better of the first half. New keeper Linegaard made a save with his legs and saw another long range shot dip and hit the top of the bar.
The visitors had most of the possession although a lot of this was backwards and sideways in front of the Preston defence. North End still couldn't get the ball before Grayson finally changed the line up after an hour.
Welsh and Johnson came off the bench to sure up the midfield. Gallagher was shifted out wide and Garner played as a lone striker. This should have been done from the start.
Preston managed to gain a foothold in the game with more possession and the odd chance although it was Lindegaard who had to make another save with his feet.
Huddesrfield broke the deadlock with ten minutes remaining. Wells was placed through and manmaged to slot past Lindegaard who had been impressive on his home debut.
North End then through caution to the wind and managed to find an equaliser. There were a number of bodies in the box when a ball was smashed in from the left. It took a deflection from a Huddersfield player and went into the back of the net.
The board had just gone up for five minutes of injury time when Woods curled in a ball from the right. Browne leapt highest and headed home for a late winner.
The visitors then went up the other end and almost equalised as they had an attempt blocked on the line. The officials thought the ball had not crossed and the danger was cleared.
Grayson rarely has a game where his Preston side win from a losing position. In the league it has never happened away from home and at Deepdale Huddersfield join the list with Peterborough, Fleetwood and more recently Rotherham.
