Carter has had a poor few seasons at Deepdale and it was obvious that Ferguson felt the midfielder just wasn't cutting the mustard towards the end of last season. With one year left on his contract he was put on the transfer list.
Leicester City were said to be interested in the second half of last season but nothing ever materialised and with Nigel Pearson now moving clubs it is unlikely anything will be forthcoming. Millwall are the latest club to be linked with Carter after making an official enquiry although no bid has been put forward as of yet.
Carter along with Chaplow, Elliott and Trotman are still on the list and looking to find other clubs before the season starts.
