Ward was replaced by young keeper Chris Neal 7 minutes from the end of the game at Deepdale following a tackle by Ipswich midfielder Ian Westlake.
Ward's injury follows news on Thursday that regular number one Andy Lonergan would be sidelined for at least six months after damaging knee ligaments during training.
"Gavin Ward sustained a very bad facial injury and was unconscious and taken to hospital in an ambulance. I thought it was a late challenge on him," North End boss Billy Davies said after the game.
"We have now lost two keepers in 24 hours but that's football. We may have to go into the transfer market but we will look at every option that is available because Andy Lonergan will be out for six to nine months."
