Nicholson went into a 50/50 tackle and came off worse from the challenge. The Scotsman had to be stretchered off with his leg being strapped down. He was taken to hospital and today it was confirmed that Nicholson had suffered a broken leg.
He is now likely to be out of action for several months. Irvine was already looking for a central midfield player after signing Schumi earlier in the Summer after Mckenna was sold to Forest. Irvine now has Carter, Schumi and Chaplow available for selection for the two midfield slots although Chris Sedgewick, Callum Davidson and Billy Jones have all played in midfield in the past with Sean St Ledger also a potential candidate.
