Mellor has been a target for Preston for some time and Simpson finally landed his man early today. It is hope that the youngster could forge a partnership with David Nugent should the under 21 international survive past the deadline with Newcastle, Middlesborough, Charlton, Everton, Portsmouth, Bolton and Crystal Palace (hope I haven't missed anyone!) all said to be interested at one stage or another but no firm offers have been fortcoming.
Simpson also had a look at the two trialists behind closed doors today. Both Knopper and Ba played but were immediately told that no deal would be offered at North End. The side went down by one goal to nil at Deepdale to Wolves with Agyemang putting in an impresive performance.
Simpson still has his eye on one or two players but they are said to be tied up at clubs. He is also keen to pursue bringing Lucketti back to the club but that will not happen before the deadline due to injuries at Bramall Lane. It is most likely that Simpson will use the emergency loan system to bring Lucketti back after the deadline.
