Preston started the season well but four defeats in a row mostly caused by abject defending have forced Irvine's hand as the back four's performance have been less than satisfactory.
It was no secret that Irvine was always in the market for a centre back with Chilvers only recenlty getting back to full fitness after several months out and Trotman still not recovered from a hernia.
Things have worsened with Davidson and Hart both picking up injuries meaning Irvine has been left with only four recognised defenders including the loan signing of Derby's Jay Mckeveley. Some suspect defending has cost Preston dear and Irvine today moved to bolster his back line.
Eddie Nolan has been signued up on a three month loan deal with a view to a permanent move from Blackburn. The youngster has only played once for Rovers in a UEFA Cup tie and the 20 year old is now looking for first team experience.
Nolan can play at centre back or right back and is an under 21 international for the Republic of Ireland. He is away with the full squad at the moment prpearing for a friendly match before joining the under 21's for a competitve game.
