Preston Connect Four

The last time preston won four games in a row at Championship level they made the play offs under Alan Irvine. It is far too early to discuss such matter this season but it is clear that Preston are over achieveing on one of the smallest budgets in the Championship.

The target at the beginning of the season was safety. Preston have accomplished that by the end of February after a home win to Charlton who are destined for League One.

After Saturday this was always going to be a let down. The play was slow, methodical and Charlton simply matched up without showing too much intelligence.

The first half was poor with one long range shot from Charlton before the deadlock was surprisingly broken by Preston. Garner scored his 100th career goal with a header and the home crowd were relieved.

Thelead was short lived through some slack defending. Wright lost his man and Gudmundsson shot home from the edge of the box giving Lindegaard no chance.

Grayson switched things at the break with Wright replaced by Robinson. The back five became a back four as Preston went 4-3-3 with Reach and Robinson out wide supporting Garner.

The impact was almost instant as Robinson's pace saw him get into the box and tap home from a cross. It was his first goal since returning to the club but he made the difference.

Preston should have built on their lead. Brown was played clean through but instead of shooting first time he had a heavy first touch allowing the oncoing keeper to parry. The ball eneded up at Reach's foot who should have hit the net but curled wide.

Reach was guilty of another miss as he shot wide from inside the box when he should have done better. Preston should have been out of sight.

The laugh of the night came when Fanni came on as a substitute for the visitors. Things then turned sour when Lennon was sent off for an off the ball lash out at Garner which was spotted by the referee.

The visitors played out with ten men and could have been reduced to nine but the referree showed a yellow for what was a malicious foul on Huntington.

The win sees Preston moce into ninth position but mor eimportantly six points behind Derby and Sheffield Wednesday who hold the final two play of positions. Preston travel to Cardiff on Saturday who sit just above them in the table.
