Preston Dismiss Poor Villa

Preston entertained Aston Villa in a league game for the first time in decades as the two of the founders of the footbal league went head to head at Deepdale.

Simon Grayson set up his side rather conservatively in a 4-5-1 formation. Pearons and Welsh were the tough tackling midfielders whilst Robinson and McGeady tried to support lone striker Hughill.

It was clear that Grayson was concerned about the potential threats from the opposition but these never materiliased. Aston Villa may well have deen in the Premier League last season but at Deepdale they were very much a lowly Championship side.

Preston took the lead early on. Pearson's season had not really started until recently due to injury but he showed why he was rated as a Manchester United youngster.

Pearson bossed the midfield and Villa were hesitant. The visitors lost the ball in midfield and Pearson pounced. He found himself bearing in on goal when he slotted past the keeper.

I expected the visitors to jump into life but it didn't happen and Preston doubled their lead befire the break. Pearson played a big part again but this time setting up Hughill who has had a good start to the season.

Things must be bad for the visitors as the large travelling contingent started booing and calling for the manager's head before the break. It would be no surpise if Di Matteo was given the boot and it would not be the first time an opposing manager got sacked after a game against Preston.

North End could have scored more. McGeady looked lively and roamed up and down the right hand side of the pitch with ease. Villa huffed and puffed but didn't really come close even missing a late penalty.

The Whites can start to look upwards and will be hoping to cut loose from the bottom few afterthe international break.
