Changes were made fromt he midweek game against Stoke. Stockley was given a start up front as Maguire was recalled to the left in place of Harrop whilst Gallagher was replaced by Browne in central midfield.
The game was tight all the way through with limited chances for both sides. North End broke through in the first half, Maguire punced ont he ball after some hesitancy at the back for the visitors. He was then pulled down from behind by Odubajo.
Johnson converted the spot kick to give Preston the lead. He then doubled the lead from the penalty spot again int he second half. This time Maguire had some space int he box before he was tripped up by Odubajo.
Wednesday made changes and former North End loanee Reach came on. He found space behind Barkhuizen and Fisher was unable to cover across. He whipped a curling ball in the box where Fletcher powered home.
The visitors searched for the equaliser but Preston held out with Stockley playing as an emergency centre back as Wednesday lobbed the ball forward.
Preston now face Hull in the Cup but in the league they will attempt to transfer their home form to some points on the road which would be a healthy start to the season.
