It was Preston's first home game of the pre-season and it was an entertaining afternoon with an open game of football until it slightly tailed off, understandably, towards the very end of the game.
Neil set Preston up in an attacking formation. The setup seems a shift in emphasis from the previous regime although, admittedly, some of Preston's most exciting players are forward thinking.
Hugill started up front on his own with Robinson just behind. Browne and Barkhuizen supported whilst Johnson anchored the midfield with Pearson. It was good to see Ben Davies at the back and he may well have a big part to play this season especially with Clarke injured.
Newcastle started strongly and took the lead through Mitrovic who enjoys playing at Deepdale. Shortly afterwards he hit the post. North End did show attacking intent and troubled the visitors.
The equaiser came when Barkhuizen was free in the box to smash home. He has had a good pre-season so far and Preston will rely on his goals this season.
The game went to and fro with both sides having chances. Maxwell made some good saves to keep Preston in the game. North End were unable to add to their goal.
Changes were made by Newcastle which slowed the game whilst Harrop came on for Preston for the final half an hour in support of the front man.
Neil ill be pleased with aspects of Preston's play. They look capable going forward and as Newcastle won the Championship last year Preston should be more confident going forward knowing that they can open up the best teams in the league next year. Work will be required on keping tight at the back.
Burnley travel to Deepdale on Tuesday evening before Preston end their pe-season programme away at Fleetwood.
