Grayson changed his line-up as expected for the JPT game at home to Shrewsbury. Stuckmann was given his first outing of the season in goal. Huntington paired King at the centre of defence with Buchanan and Woods playing at full back. Browne, Brownhill and Wesh played in midfield whilst Hayhurst and Laird supported Hughill.
The game started off well put fell away towards the end of the first half. North End were unable to take the lead and seemed to falter with only one up front as Shrewsbury got to grips with the home side and the formation.
Shrewsbury threatened very rarely and Preston took the lead on the hour mark as Woods darted into the box before pulling back for Hughill to slot home. The youngster has impressed recently and played well again.
Thevisitors then searched for an equaliser whilst Preston changed to a 4-4-2 with Davies and Garner coming on up front whilst Reid was given his first start out wode. Preston were more threatening and had chances to score more including Brownhill late on who had a shot deflected wide.
The performance was solid if not spectacular and Preston go through to the next round with a squad that is capable of progressing far in this competition.
