North End changed their formation to 4-4-2 in an attempt to be more attacking at home to MK Dons. Garner started up front alongside Davies with Holmes and Humphrey out wide. The back five remained the same with Kean and Welsh anchoring the midfield.
Preston got off to a positive starte as Holmes found space to play in Humphrey down the right. Garner pulled back in the box as the ball was crossed only for Kay to divert past his own keeper.
The Whites looked good going forward but were then stunned by the visitors in what seemed like their first attack of the match. A 30 yard screamer left Rudd clutching at fresh air although the goal was one which befitted a much higher stage.
Preston remained undeterred and before the break took the lead again with Joe Garner converting his first of the season. At this point Preston were dominant and should have made the visitors pay.
The visitors struggled with Preston's high pressing game and were forced into errors. Holmes had an opportunity to score from range with the keeper stranded but his shot went wide.
MK Dons came out stronger int he second half and Preston appeared to struggle as the visitors had more of the ball. They eventually got an equaliser when Humphrey appeared to trip an opposing player in the box. The penalty was duly converted.
Grayson will feel his side should have done better after twice taking the lead. His side were undone by a stunning strike and a penalty although there is little consolation Preston were not completely run ragged.
North End now face Coventry down in Northampton next Sunday where they will look for their first league win of the season.
