North End were on a recent run of good form but that was halted by a Millwall side who have caused difficulties at Deepdale over the past few seasons.
Preston were on the end of a four two home defeat in what was an entertaining game but there are still questions over where this season is heading as North End sit just outside the play offs as they enter this enforced one month break.
Millwall flew into a two goal lead. The first was scored by Flemming who was allowed to fire off a shot when the defence should have done better. The second was totally avoidable as Flemming again scored direct from a free kick which appeared to go straight through the wall leaving Woodman flat footed.
Preston did come back into the game. Hughes was credited with the first after a scramble in the box with the keeper also getting a touch. Evans then levellled with a header to continue his recent good form.
It seemed like Preston would come out on top after the break. They had early chances but could not convert before some sloppy defending allowed Millwall to retake the lead.
Flemming completed his hat trick with Cresswall adding a fourth to finish the scoring. In reality the goals could and should have been avoided.
Preston will play some friendly games over the lay off period. Whilst they will defend better in games they do need to become more consistent in what is a very average league if they are to make the top six at the end of the season.
