Alex Neil made several changes after the opening day defeat to Millwall. Many were surprised as Maguire was asked to play out left with Moult returning centrally and Bodin given a start on the right. Daniel Johnson was also preferred in the number ten role behind Moult.
North End got off to a flying start and took the lead in the opening ten minutes. Wigan were down to ten men temporarily due to an injury but lacklustre marking saw Maguire convert from a corner to give Preston the lead.
Shortly after the lead was doubled as Preston raided down the left hand side. A cross was put in to the middle where Moult was in acres of space to nod home to open his account for the season.
Preston played well going forward but they were aided by Wigan who were poor defensively. The only dark spot was Pearson picking up a booking although it appeared that he went for a 50/50 tackle and won the ball.
The victory was confirmed in the second half when Gallagher scored from the edge of the box on the angle. It was unclear if he meant to shoot or it was simply an overhit cross but the ball ended up in the back of the net.
It will be a relief for Preston that they have their first win of the season. Changes will be made for Tuesday's trip to Bradford in the Cup but North End will hope to build some momentum off the back of this positive performance.
