Preston entered their seventh post season campaign with a delayed kick off which saw the highest attendance of the year at Elland Road as 5,000 fans travelled across the Pennines.
Leeds tried to force the home advantage and had much of the possession without creating too many clear cut chances in the first half. Healy looked dangerous but it was Kilgallon with a header hitting the post being the closest either side came to scoring.
Both sides made several changes from the previous encounter days earlier. Preston started with David Nugent for the first time in almost two months and it paid dividends after 47 minutes. The under 21 international took the ball and ran the Leeds defence ragged before slotting calmly past Neil Sullivan.
Preston had much of the ball in the second half but could not find a killer second goal. Some poor refereeing saw some strange decisions being made and Leeds came back into the game when a soft free kick was awarded just outside the Preston box. Leeds always looked a threat from set pieces and Eddie Lewis curled the ball around the wall only for Alexander to head into his own net.
Neither side could find a winning goal and both sides return to Deepdale on Monday and with no away goals counting the match now becomes a one of cup tie with extra time and penalties a possibility.
