The game was stop start due to a whistle happy referee who kept his hand out of his pocket until the final fifteen minute frenzy.
Preston took the lead early on as Mawene headed in from a corner to give North End the perfect start. The home side looked to try and double their advantage as the visitors only threatened on the break in the first period. West Brom had the ball in the net but the referee had already blown.
West Brom came out after the break fired up and pressing for an equaliser which soon arrived. Gera was allowed space in midfield and saw a tremendous 30 yard shot fly past Lonergan.
The away team looked to take the game to Preston but were denied on several occassions by last ditch tackles, blocks and several saves by Lonergan.
Preston looke dlively going forward and a cross flew across the box and was headed in at cllose range by Hawley. West Brom looked for another equaliser being denied and hitting the bar.
The game descended into chaos as Mawene picke dup a booking for something none of the officials saw. Soon after he was injured and set to be replaced by Hill but on limping off the referre inexplicable showed a second yellow to Mawene presumably for time wasting.
Moments later Brown was booked for a spat that he wa son the receiving end of and then a rash lunge meant he saw his second yellow to leave Preston with nine men for the final five minutes.
Substitutes were made and Preston survived with the only price of the Mawene and Brown missing the long journey to Norwich. Preston will take heart from being well organised and picking up another home win against impressive opposition.
