For the third time in four games Preston went down to a late goal and once again they fell to a sucker punch against Portsmouth. The game was open with Portsmouth getting the ball down and passing without creating too may opprotunities in the first half. Preston came out the stronger in the second half and took the game to Portsmouth with David James being the saviour on several occassions. Preston played some good football and created various chances but were denied each time by the England international. Preston's best chance came when Billy Jones was fouled in the box. Whaley took the resulting penalty which was saved and Preston could not force home the rebound. Portsmouth who looked second best for the majority of the second half snatched a winner from a close range effort in the 93rd minute. The result was somewhat unjust on Preston who battled hard and had the majority of the play and chances. Preston now have to concentrate on the league with two games against top four opposition coming up in short succession. |
